They can be used to send a user to a specific website link for coupons or specials,  import contact information, and much more. They were developed by a subsidy of Toyota in 1994 and are common place  in Japan.  QR Code’s effectiveness has been proven and they are becoming more mainstream in the United States with companies such as Tag Huer, Macys, and Calvin Klein using them for special promotions.
